How to remove a password from a PDF you own, then merge it

By MomoPDF · · 3 min read

Some PDFs, like bank statements, payslips or tax forms, need a password just to open. MomoPDF can’t open those yet, so Merge and the other tools will say the file “needs a password to open”.

If the document is yours and you know the password, you can save an unlocked copy with an app you probably already have, then use that copy with MomoPDF.

Only do this for documents you own or have permission to change. MomoPDF never tries to guess or break passwords.

On a computer, with Chrome or Edge

  1. Open the PDF in Chrome or Edge, for example by dragging it into a browser window.
  2. Type the password when asked.
  3. Press Ctrl + P (⌘ + P on a Mac) to print.
  4. Choose Save as PDF as the printer (in Edge, Microsoft Print to PDF also works), then save.

On a Mac, with Preview

  1. Open the PDF in Preview and type the password.
  2. Choose File → Export as PDF and save it under a new name.

Menu names can differ slightly between versions.

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the PDF in the Files app and type the password.
  2. Tap Share, then Print.
  3. Tap Share again on the print screen and choose Save to Files.

Then merge it

Open Merge PDF and add the unlocked copy with your other files. It works in the other tools too.

Good to know

  • Printing to PDF changes the file. It keeps what you see on the pages, but links, bookmarks and fillable form boxes may be lost. That’s fine for most statements.
  • If the creator also blocked printing, the print option may be greyed out. Ask the sender for a copy without a password.
  • The unlocked copy isn’t protected. Keep the original, and delete the unlocked copy when you’re done with it.
